Bike Ban in the Back-country

January 20, 2010

Letter Circulating in U.S. House Threatens to Ban Bikes in 3 Million Back-country Acres

IMBA is asking all mountain bikers to contact their U.S. Representatives and ask them to reject a request from U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva (Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands) to sign his “Dear Colleague” letter. The letter calls for the Forest Service to manage Recommended Wilderness like Wilderness, including a blanket ban on mountain biking.

Pedal Driven – A Bikeumentary

December 16, 2009

In the pristine forests above Leavenworth, Washington, there exists a world of hidden trailheads and clandestine trails. Here a sect of outdoor enthusiasts, extreme mountain bikers called freeriders, have gone underground. They are the skate punks of the forest, unwelcome and under pressure to leave. The locations of their trails are carefully guarded secrets and the riders who ride them keep constant vigil, on the lookout for US Forest Service rangers.

But they wont leave. Each time one of their trails or jumps is destroyed they sneak back in and rebuild, believing that they have a right to ride through these landscapes. And now, in an effort to combat the problem, local district rangers have been given heightened authority to put any freeriders caught on undesignated trails directly into jail.

Ironically, it can be argued that both sides are fighting for the same thing the rights of Americans to play in the woods. The freeriders want the freedom to ride through the natural sanctuaries that are our public forestlands. The U.S. Forest Service is acting to fulfill its legal obligation to administer those same lands, for the use and enjoyment of the American people.

The documentary PEDAL-DRIVEN will take you behind both sides of this confrontation riding with the freeriders and chasing them down with the rangers in an exploration of issues increasingly important to all Americans. With an ever-increasing population and a finite supply of unspoiled wildlands, the sense of urgency around protecting and preserving these national treasures only grows. PEDAL-DRIVEN will examine the shared philosophies of stewardship and sustainability from both sides and, ultimately, offer examples of the ways in which opposing factions can find common ground in defense of our common grounds.

Important Forest Service Directives Distance Bicycling From Motorized Uses

November 28, 2008

The U.S. Forest Service is taking important steps to differentiate mountain biking from motorized use. Fresh revisions to administrative directives include important new language clarifying bicycling as a non-motorized activity. This comes on the heels of a landmark internal memo on the same topic, announced at the IMBA World Summit in June.

Famous Moab Trails Put at Risk by Drilling Leases

November 20, 2008

IMBA urges mountain bikers to help preserve some of Moab’s most famous trails. A new Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plan would lease land parcels for oil and gas extraction near iconic trails such as Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, Barlett Wash and Tusher Canyon, turning sections of trail into heavily used access roads. IMBA respects the need for domestic energy production, but believes Moab is better served by protecting its world-class recreational assets.

Local Trail Daze

November 3, 2008
The Halo Trail project is a new 6.5 mile long non-motorized trail for hikers, runners and mountain bikers that came out of the USFS Peavine Roads and Rec Strategy.  This project is being spearheaded by the Poedunks - our groups mission is to work with our local land agencies to improve and expand Peavine’s trail network legally.

We have partnered with the USFS, Washoe County ParksNevada State Parks, and the Nevada Conservation Corps to help implement this new trail segment.  The NCC has started work on the trail and we now have the opportunity to supplement their effort with volunteer days.

We will be working the next two Saturdays on the Halo Trail, as well as the next Sunday on the N-Trail at Rancho San Rafael.

For more information on dates, times and what you need to bring, go to: Poedunk.com We hope you can join us and look forward to seeing you out on the trail.

The Halo Trail

August 8, 2008

Peavine Mountain * Reno, Nevada

The Poedunks have been busy since the beginning of the year to make a new legal trail on Peavine possible. Since then we have incorporated, received non-profit status, successfully applied for a NV State Trails grant and will be signing a Volunteer Agreement with the USFS to make it possible to do volunteer projects on the mountain. The State Trail Grant will provide funding to hire out the construction of a new trail on Peavine scheduled to begin in mid to late October of this year. In preparation for this we will be hiking the proposed “*Halo” trail alignment in 2 mile sections to further refine the trail layout. If you are interested in hiking the new trail alignment and learning about trail layout and design, we will be meeting and hiking on the following Wednesday evenings.

Halo Hikes – Wednesdays @ 5:30 pm

  • August 13 – Section 1: meet at WEST Keystone Canyon TH (at the end of Leadership Parkway off North McCarran)
  • August 20 – Section 2: meet at EAST Keystone Canyon TH
  • August 27 – Section 3: meet at Hoge Road TH ( west on Hoge of North Virginia Street)

Be prepared for cross country hiking, suggest wearing hiking boots, long pants, bring sunscreen and water. Meet at 5:30 pm, hiking by 5:45 pm and get back to trailhead around 8:30 pm.

*The Halo Trail came out of the USFS 2004 Peavine Roads and Recreation Strategy, establishing a non-motorized zone around Keystone Canyon and this 6.5 mile long trail segment. Working with the USFS, the Washoe County Parks Department also has a grant to help sign and block off the designated non-motorized zone. Although Halo Trail grant will provide funds to hire the Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC) to build the new trail, we will looking for volunteers this fall to help with the new trail construction when necessary and to help with the boundary signage, barricades and roads reclamation.

The Poedunks mission is to maintain and enhance Peavines non-motorized trail network by volunteering to do trail maintenance, trail building and mountain clean ups by working with the U.S. Forest Service, Washoe County Parks, the City of Reno, and other Peavine user groups.
