Downieville, California * Sunday November 19th, 2006
The riding is still awesome at Downieville and there are no crowds! The trail was a little wet on top but most of the trail was tacky for mega traction, plus no dust to be seen anywhere!

Downieville Shuttle:
We goofed up and didn’t reserve a shuttle van for the trip back to Packer Saddle where our cars were parked. By the time we got to Downieville (2pm) both Yuba Expeditions and Downieville Outfitters were closed. It is November after all!
As we were standing around wondering what to do, Dan Farrington and Ingrid Larson (owners of the Downieville Grocery ) came by and offered a couple of us a ride back up to Packer Saddle to get the cars. Those of you that’ve been to D-ville know that this is no small feat – the drive to Packer Saddle is 1.5 hours round trip. Many thanks to Dan and Ingrid – we might still be in Downieville if not for them.
So support the mountain biker friendly Downieville Grocery the next time you’re in town! They make the best sandwiches anywhere!

Downieville Grocery is believed to be the oldest continuous grocery store in California and possibly the United States. Opened in 1881 the store has been at the same location.

Downieville Outfitters:
Another note of interest: the Downieville Outfitters are moving from their original building and the building is for sale. We don’t know where they’re moving to next, check their website for updates.

Downieville Outfitters was in the building on the left, behind Dave.

A hearty thanks from Dan & Ingrid for all of your kind words and thoughts about Downieville Grocery. We look forward to a great 2008 and wish you all the best bicycling year ever!
The Deli is being transformed this Winter into the “Pick & Shovel Eatery” and will serve dinners nightly except Sunday in addition to our delicious breakfast foods and lunch sandwiches and other scrumptious deli items.
We are happy to announce that we now own the former Downieville Inn property and plan on building the Lodge at Downieville. It will take a few years but we plan to make it a place to be enjoyed by all who visit.
In the meantime, the former residence on the property is available as a vacation rental. It will sleep six, has a full yard, barbeque, etc, and “off-street” parking. Check it out on Craig’s list. We are taking reservations now for next season and if you reserve by January 31st, we will honor the Winter rate of $150 for the first night and $125 for each night thereafter. We are dog friendly for a $50 pet deposit.
Spread the word and Happy New Year!!!!
Best regards to all of you,
Dan & Ingrid at Downieville Grocery & The Lodge at Downieville
