Setup your Dual Suspension Bike To Rail the Turns

The very best dual suspension bikes can ride terribly if the shock and fork settings are not setup correctly.

Important factors to consider for suspension setup include:

  • frame design and size
  • shock and fork balancing
  • rider height and weight
  • riding style
  • type of terrain in which the bike is ridden

Setup up options can include adjustments for:

  • rebound
  • high speed compression
  • low speed compression
  • preload
  • sag (spring weight or main chamber pressure)
  • shock linearity and progressiveness
  • stable platform specific settings (Pro Pedal, SPV, Motion Control)
  • lockout blow off threshold
  • positive and negative air pressure
  • oil viscosity
  • travel settings
  • and more depending on make and model

Suspension setup is complicated as all of these factors must be taken into consideration when setting up a bike. Today suspension setup is as much an art as it is a science.  To get a truly balanced and efficient ride you must rely on the knowledge and touch of a expert as much as the fork or shock's documentation.

Modern downhill racing is a sport that has evolved around the innovations of dual suspension technology. Often the difference between a top finish or crashing comes down to subtle suspension tweeks. Eric Opperman and Curtis Opperman are long time bike mechanics, trail riders, Semi-Pro DH and Super D racers and have spent years setting up and experimenting with all types of suspension bikes.

Eric and Curtis are now offering Custom Supsension Setup sessions for XC, FR and DH riders.  Each session takes about an hour and involves a complete suspension analysis, adjustment and instructions for your bike. Bring your helmet and riding cloths as the session involves some riding.

The cost is the standard shop rate of $40 for the session up to an hour. By appointment only.
