Whites Creek, Jones Creek Trail and Thomas Creek Areas at the Base of Mount Rose
There is a great area just SW of Reno that has tons of Sierra riding. There are trail bike, XC and shuttle options in this area that start at Galena Creek Park or Timberline Rd and go all the way down to Whites Creek Park at the end of Killington.

Parking area for the Dry Pond ride. Take the Mt Rose Highway about 5.5 mi to Timberline Rd. Go north about 1.5 mi on Timberline Road. Continue past the Thomas Creek road which is on your left. Just a little further is the parking for the Dry Pond / Thomas Creek. The single track starts in the SW corner of the parking lot.

The "Brave Little Toaster" pulling shuttle duty. Warning: if you try this trick yourself make sure to keep the bike tires away from the hot exhaust pipe!

Trail Descriptions and Maps:
There are a couple of good shuttle options that follow Whites Creek down from Timberline Rd. There is also a gnarly single track down to Zollezi Lane from Timberline Rd. It's fun to combine a trail bike climb with a shuttle vehicle at the bottom. Pedal up from Galena Creek Park or Timberline Rd and finish the ride with a DH bomb all the way to Whites Creek Park. Awesome!
Great Basin Bikes has a description of one of the trail heads and some of the ride options (with a XC slant) http://www.greatbasinbicycles.com/Maps/Dry-Pond_Galena.htm.
Reno Gazette Journal description of the Jones/Whites Creek Trail Loop Some of this trail is not rideable as it goes into the Mt. Rose Wilderness area, but the article contains useful information if you're riding the area.
RGJ trail description of the Dry Pond Trail . This trail is a great ride up to the pond that is full of water early season. Another RGJ Dry Pond Trail article
